We are a husband and wife team (known on the battlefields as the 38th Club in memory of the 38th (Welsh) Division with whom my father served for over 3 years) who have researched the military history of many fascinating Campaigns over the years, as well as our own family involvement, and have studied and visited a considerable number of battlefields with friends, some of whom have travelled with us regularly and have shared many a memorable experience together.
Our visits for the First World War include many of the battlefields on the Somme, Belgium, Gallipoli (where my wife’s great uncle was awarded the Victoria Cross on Hill 60 whilst serving with the 10th Australian Light Horse), Northern Italy and Slovenia. Second World War Campaigns include Normandy, Arnhem, Sicily and Central Italy. Far flung places of the British Empire have also proved compelling Expeditions and include South Africa and the Anglo Zulu Wars, (Isandlwana, Rorkes Drift), the First and Second Boer Wars,(Majuba, Ladysmith, Mafeking), the Crimean War battles in Ukraine (Balaclava,The Alma and Sebastapol) and India (Indian Mutiny, Delhi, Lucknow, Cawnpore, Agra, Jaipur and Shimla).
In an informal way we have walked the ground over which these battles were fought, studied contemporary maps, and gained a deeper understanding of why these actions took place, how the Campaigns evolved and discussed the outcome, which in many cases resulted in terrible and tragic loss of life. Our purpose is to “keep alive the memory” of all those who served in these Campaigns, and we invite you to share this aim with us.
